105. Making chains

Remember the old Beatles song?

Chains, my baby's got me locked up in chains
And they ain't the kind that you can see
Whoa, oh, these chains of love got a hold on me, yeah

Of course you don't remember. But your (grand)mother does...

Well, we're going to talk about a different kind of chains... the kind you can see... and many have a love-hate relationship with them.

But just like the Slipknot, they form the foundation of crocheting - much like love is the foundation of any romantic relationship.

In this tutorial I will explain how to make a foundation chain. Baby steps... you will be crocheting like a pro before you know it. Enjoy making miles of chains in the meantime!

In crochet, the chain stitch is usually abbreviated as "cs".

Note that in future lessons I will cover the chainless foundation stitch - not only will it be easier to work with, but is looks nicer too. But let's start with the conventional method of making a foundation first.

Ready? Did you get your slipknot done?
